Luke (ルーク, Rūku), real name Lukather Harden (ルカサー・ハーデン, Rukasā Hāden), is both a Makai Knight and Makai Alchemist in Vanishing Line. He was trained to be an Alchemist by his mother, Adelaide, and a knight by his father, Christopher. After his father's corruption, he focused on being a Makai Alchemist and partnered to Sword in Russell City. In the aftermath of El Dorado, Luke found a new focus as a knight gaining the title of Zelos.

Personality[]

As the result of his father's fall into darkness leading to him destroyed their home and discarded his own family in a bloody betrayal, Luke was filled with great feelings of guilt, anger, sadness, and embitterment over his own weakness as a child that marred his integrity as a protector he meant to be, developing cynical and reclusive behavior where he outright ignoring any civilian addressing him in addition of believing the Makai Order should not involve itself with normal humans outside of hunting Horrors and should maintain the utmost secrecy. This put him into odds with Sword due to the latter's more outgoing and sociable behavior, finding the Makai Knight too unprofessional and too involved with the human world. However, in spite of his reluctance to work alongside him due to their clashing viewpoints and attitudes, he begrudgingly acknowledges Sword's strength and intuition. Luke is also fiercely independent and confident of his own skills and power, resulting in him hating to ask favors from anyone. He also holds immense hatred for his father, now Knight of the Three Swords of El Dorado, to the point that his normally stoic demeanor cracks and he flies into a blind rage during their first battle, which allowed the Dark Knight to defeat him on ease before Sword took over the fight instead.

After witnessing the suffering caused by the destruction from Sword and Knight's first battle, Luke eventually recalled his mother's dying words, about strength, is attained for others and not for himself, that he learned to calm his heart and mind. During that point, he also realized how his hatred around that point led to becoming dangerously similar to his father's. He swears from then on to honor his mother's memory by becoming a better protector, asking Meifang to give him a black eye as a reminder, before leaving Russell City for his next mission. This change of better not only allowed him to be more sociable than he used to be, but also fared better during the rematch against his fallen father despite incapable of defeating him. By that point, he has become a true protector as much as Sword which earned him the title of Zelos.

History[]

Background[]

Luke was raised in a makai family. His father was a Caucasian Makai Knight named Christopher Harden aka. Howling Silver Knight Bolg and his mother, the Native American descent Makai Alchemist Adelaide. Throughout his childhood, he trained in both fields, being trained as a knight by his father and an alchemist by his mother. Looking up to his father, Luke had his heart settled to become a knight and learned how to properly wield Soul Metal, but still took alchemist training from Adelaide who taught him how to perform basic alchemy techniques essential for Makai Alchemists in order to become a full-fledged one and use Makai Guns.

As with many who looked up to Howling Silver Knight Bolg, Luke failed to notice that his father and role model began to stray from the path of protector, though in his case, it was attributed to his young age and therefore had much to learn at that time, including being a good judge of character like his mother did. During their first horror hunt together, Christopher was too focused on defeating most challenging of the enemies than taking his son's safety into the account as much as his wife. Sometime later, he overheard an argument between his parents over a forbidden Madō Tome leading to Christopher begrudgingly taking the tome so he would dispose it himself. Sadly, he would learn how far his father had fallen in harshest way possible upon his return and brutal fallout with Adelaide which culminated to her death and the destruction of their home. In her last moments, Adelaide attempted to tell her son that strength is meant to be attained for others and not for oneself, but it would take years for Luke to finally accepted it for the trauma he had from such ordeal resulted him to be consumed by rage, sadness, grief, and self-loathing to his own weakness. While it appeared he decided to take on the path of Makai Alchemist to honor his late mother, the real reason of this was because he loathed his original dream to be a Makai Knight his father used to be and self-loathing, negatively affected his dynamic with Sword.

Vanishing Line[]

Luke first appears in Russell City, summoning rain that erases people's memories after Sword caused a commotion while destroying a Horror. While in the city, he assumes the role of a private detective, gathering information from the city's residents, while dealing with Horrors in the area. It is also implied that Luke is also searching for clues towards El Dorado, all while often getting involved in missions partnering with Sword, much to his chagrin. Luke initially disapproved of bringing in Sophie into their side of the Makai Order, as he felt that dragging along a girl could jeopardize their missions. However, after Sword saved Luke inside a theater with Sophie's help, he showed gratitude to both of them and eventually warmed up to Sophie.

When Knight arrived in the city to take Sophie away, Luke confronts his father, vowing to get revenge on her mother's death. Though the Makai Priest puts up a good fight, Knight handily defeats and impales him with his naginata, still calling him a child. Knight drops him from a building, where a Zaruba-controlled Madou Two-Wheels catches him to escape.

Abilities[]

  • Makai Alchemist Training: Trained by his mother, Adelaide Harden, Luke learned to be a proficient gun shooter and spell caster. His training was incomplete when his mother died; it is likely he finished it by training with someone else as the order recognizes his skills and talents to work with Garo.
  • Makai Knight Training: Trained by his father, Christopher Harden, Luke learned melee combat from the former Silver Knight. His combat training was halted after his father betrayed and murdered his mother, Adelaide. It is later revealed that he had completed his training, but following the Howling Knight's betrayal and fall into darkness, he acquired a silver armor of his own.
  • Deductive Reasoning: When he was assigned to check on the location where the Demon Sealer sealed his fallen comrade under the instruction of the Land of Guidance, he is able to deduce how the latter became a Horror through examining the battlefield around the seal.
