Burai is a Makai Priest within the Ryūga-verse. He was featured in The One Who Shines in the Darkness as a mentor to Ryūga Dōgai and Rian. The priest would lead his own team to investigate the rise of the Madō Horrors

Personality[]

Burai is a Makai Priest that specializes in the development of madōgus (magical tools), anti-horror research, magical combat, and mentorship. Before the events of The One Who Shines in the Darkness, he was inspired to work with Hakana Dōgai (Ryuga's mom) to help restore Garo's lost golden shine and make Ryuga the next Garo. Unfortunately, this quest would lead to tragedies and pressed Burai to be a guardian to Ryuga and Rian.

The quest to restore Garo has led the deaths of Rikyo (Rian's dad) and Hakana. He promised both parents to look after their children. However, guardianship wasn't easy for him and he was wrought with anger, guilt, and self-hatred over his failure(s). He couldn't face Ryuga and felt unfit to raise Rian; he aimed to kill himself but was stopped by his friend Ouma. After seeing how strong Rian was trying to press on in life and him running away, Burai found the resolve to press on. Because Burai can't be with Ryuga all the time, he left Rago behind to help train Ryuga. After Ryuga became the next Garo, Ryuga angrily ran off after learning his mother's fate and resented Burai for not telling him. Burai knew Ryuga's determination to become Garo was because of his mother; telling him would affect him training. He understood Ryuga's resentment and encouraged him to be strong; the two would meet again at Volcity.

With the rise of Madō Horrors, Burai summoned Zen, Gai, Garo, and Rian to help him in his investigation into Volcity. Unfortunately, each of the knights were young, immature, and lack discipline. Burai took the chance to lead this ragtag group to resolve the dark mysteries of the city and mold the knights into better warriors, especially Ryuga. Burai would channel Ryuga's sense of duty and anger to keep him focused on the mission. Their mutual struggles and comradery helped change their hostile relationship to a more respectful one. After a rescue mission revealing Hakana is alive, Burai's guilt was lifted and Ryuga no longer carries any hate towards him.

When the team learned about Zedom's awakening, Burai prepared as much magical measures he could think of against the horror. When he faced Zedom, Burai offered himself to the horror in hopes to calm his rage, but Zedom wanted a knight's body and disintegrated him. Unknown to everyone, Burai took his death into consideration and left his brush behind. When Rian discovered Burai's brush, what remained of his spirit told her to use it to create a weakness for the team to defeat Zedom. Although he made the ultimate sacrifice, Burai's commitment to restoring Garo and mentoring the next generation is his greatest legacy.

History[]

Early Days[]

Burai was born and raised within the Makai Order. He grew up with Hakana Dōgai and Ouma and the three of them became Makai Priests. When they were kids, the trio visited the Tower of Heroic Spirits and saw the Garo armor for the first time. Shocked at how black it is, they thought the title of golden knight was a farce. A Makai Monk appeared and tearfully explained the knight used the armor's golden energy to defeat a great evil at the cost of his life and has become black since. Hakana claims to have heard the armor's desire to be restored again. Although Ouma thought it was a joke, Burai believed in Hakana and the two would make it their life dream to restore Garo.

As adults, Hakana and Burai worked at the Tower of Heroic Spirits to restore Garo. They knew even if they can restore Garo's golden shine, a new knight must succeed as the next Garo. Hakana chose her son, Ryūga Dōgai, to become the next Garo. While Hakana looked into ways in restoring the armor's golden shine, Burai helped train Ryuga to become a Makai Knight. Knowing the boy deeply loves his mother and would work hard to please her, he motivated Ryuga by mentioning Hakana. Unfortunately, their quest would end in tragedy with rise of Tousei Kaneshiro.

The quest into restoring Garo's golden shine led Burai and Hakana to seek the power of Zedom. The Horror's seedlings is the source of Soul Metal, the alloy used for all armors and weapons within the order. Burai travelled to the Hill of Zedom's Arm (a secluded cave where Zedom is sealed) with Rikyo, Hakana, Sonshi, and a priestess to perform the Zedom's Ritual Spell in attempt to process the seedling to power Garo. While the priestesses were successful in recovering a sapling, the process was interrupted with the arrival of Tousei Kaneshiro.

Tousei was the son of an expelled priestess and the bastard son of Kensui Kaneshiro. Resentful that Kensui never acknowledged him, Tousei looked into the makai world for a means to attain power. He learned about Zedom and disrupted the ritual on the same day Hakana and Burai was there. He threw a flash bang, causing confusion and disorientation. The explosion turned Zedom's seal into a gateway and Horrors started crossing through. Sonshi and the priests defended themselves against the horrors, but in the ensuing chaos, Zedom threw a handful of seedlings into Hakana. Burai attempted to look after Hakana but the ground ripped open and he fell underground, knocking him out.

Tousei would turn Sonshi into his first Madō Horror; he had Sonshi devour the priestess and mortally wound Rikyo. By the time Burai woke up to search for his team members, only Rikyo remained. As Rikyo was dying, he asked Burai to look after his daughter (Rian) and passed his hair pin as a memento before passing. Unable to find Hakana, he presumed Hakana died from the battle and he left to recover Rian.

Burai would travel to find Rian and broke the news of her father's death. Rian thought it was a lie but accepted Rikyo's death after Burai showed her the hair pin. Burai would take Rian back to his home and live with her, but the thought of Hakana's death angered him. Rian was scared to see Burai angry and ran off. Ouma was worried about Burai's mental/emotional state and came to see him. He knew Burai blamed himself over Hakana's death and reminded him she made a choice and death was part of the consequence.

Ouma reminded Burai that he still needs to protect Ryuga and Rian; Burai wasn't sure how to face Ryuga. Burai didn't feel he was capable of looking after two kids and already reached out to Kantai (a place where knights and priests train) to look after the both of them. Burai entrusted Ouma to take Rian to Kantai, he believed she would be in better hands without him. As soon as the two left, Burai's guilt over everything that's happened got to him and he tried to commit suicide. Ouma suspected something was off and he returned to find Burai getting ready to stab his own throat.

The two got into a struggle and Ouma disarmed him. Burai felt Ouma didn't understand what he was going through, but as childhood friends, he knew it was his guilt affecting him. Ouma let Burai go and told him to do whatever he wants. It was during that time that Rian ran off as she was afraid of what's happening. The two would search for Rian until nightfall. They thought they lost her but found her inside Burai's room. As the two took a breather, they talked about their childhood days, Garo, and their life. Burai realized that Rian is doing her best despite losing her father and that he should also do his best as well.

The following day, Burai would find Rian practicing her spell casting and showed her how to properly do it. Ouma arrived to take her to Kantai, but as they walked away, Burai had a change of heart. He told Rian to stay with him and he promise to train her to become a great priestess. Rian chose to stay with Burai and gave him Rikyo's hair pin as her way of accepting him. The two would train for several years before sending her off to Kantai for magical school training.

A decade of training later, Ryuga graduated as the next Garo and Burai finally broke the news of his mother's death. Saddened over his mother's death and enraged at Burai's deception, he ran away from the hall. Burai understood Ryuga's reasons for hating him but still encouraged him to be strong and live up to title as Garo. Ryuga became a wandering knight; he slayed Horrors everywhere he travelled but never once answered to the Makai Order. However, things would change with the rise of the Madō Horrors at Volcity.

Volcity was a new city that has no knights nor priests protecting it; Burai plans to investigate the city. Rian recently returned from Kantai, she graduated as an honor student and Burai was proud to see her growth. He invited Rian to join him and she quickly accepted. Burai took the chance to return Rikyo's hairpin back to Rian. As he prepares to head to Volcity, he's excited to see Ryuga again despite knowing the troubles it would bring.

The One Who Shines in the Darkness[]

Burai and Rian heads to Volcity to investigate the state of things as the city has no assigned knight nor priest. He sent Orders Documents to three Makai Knights (Ryūga Dōgai, Takeru Jakuzure, and Aguri Kusugami) to help him with this mission. However, it was also a chance to see Ryuga and refine his abilities as a knight. Things would start off messily as Ryuga crashed a wedding to slay the possessed bride. Without any concern to secrecy, Ryuga made a spectacle of the situation and drew the attention of SG1. While Ryuga escaped the authorities, Burai and the others have been observing him.

While Ryuga was resting, the bride's bouquet revealed to be the true body of the horror and tried to bite him. Burai dispatched Rago and had him devour the bouquet. Ryuga wasn't happy to see Burai again and when he confirmed the orders document came from him, he destroyed the msg in front of him and walked off. However, Burai reminded him of his duty as knight and the city must be saved. Ryuga begrudgingly stayed as he is has the heart of a protector.

Abilities[]

  • Makai Priest Training: Burai received magical training within the Makai Order; he's skilled in martial arts and magical combat. His development is well rounded as he's able to craft magical tools, great investigative ability, tactical coordination, spell casting, and magical combat.

Equipment[]

  • Madō Brush: Burai has a custom fashioned brush that doubles as a whip; it's wrapped in leather and comes with a jewel piece attached to it. Because there was no explanation behind his modifications, it can only be speculated he made it easier for gripping and the jewel is an enhancement device for his spell casting.
  • Makai Beast Ragō: Rago is Burai's sentient machine used in horror combat and transportation. He can summon Rago through a portal and use it to take down a weak horror or use it as musher to magically fly. He would later transfer control to Rian.
