Heroic Spirits (英霊, Eirei) is the twenty fifth and final episode of the midnight tokusatsu series GARO. The episode features the death of Gulm, Messiah and Kiba.
Synopsis[]
Garo makes his final stand against Messiah and after defeating her, Barago reappears to try and destroy Tokyo. Kouga finds he cannot summon his armor to stop Kiba, so Zaruba pays the ultimate price to save his young charge.
Summary[]
Kouga Saejima rushes to attack Messiah as Rei Suzumura battles Gulm. Kouga is easily defeated by Messiah, who is creating Horrors as she walks.
Kaoru Mitsuki is encouraged by her father to paint as her paintings can give strength to others.
Zaruba tells Kouga that Messiah is planning to enter Kaoru in one go, but Kouga is dragged down by a group of Horrors.
As Kaoru finished her painting, Kouga obtains the Winged Garo form. Kaoru is told by Yuji, that he and her mother, who appears, are always looking out for her. This heartfelt reunion leaves Kaoru uplifted and full of hope.
Kouga chases after Messiah, who is firing energy blasts at him.
Gonza Kurahashi rushes to try and save Rei, but can't control the Soul Metal sword; he is confirmed to have sufficient willpower to lift it, yet lack of proper training leaves him at disadvantage. Nevertheless, as Gulm kicks Gonza aside, he throws the sword to Rei, thus allowing him to kill Gulm.
Garo's duel against Messiah culminates with her managing to stab the latter in the forehead, causing her to perish. As he is trying to escape a vortex resulted from her death, Kiba unexpectedly emerges from it and grabs onto his legs, but he is rescued by Kaoru.
At Human Realm, the newly emerged Kouga and Kaoru reunite with Gonza and Rei but, they have little time to celebrate as Kiba appears from the portal shortly after them. Kouga and Rei fight Kiba who curiously addresses himself as neither Barago nor Ryuzaki, hinting the corrupted Makai Armor to be worn by the wearer's surviving evil qi. As they are unable to transform, Zaruba tells Kouga to throw him into the void, which Kouga does.
Kouga, Rei and Kiba battle on the magic circle which has returned to its normal size. It is a long duel which brings the combatants to the city's harbor with Kouga being one last standing as Kiba kicked Rei aside into a building at one point. Recalling how Barago delivered a fatal blow against his father, Kouga delivers a punch which conceals the tip of his sword to foil his opponent when the latter attempts to do the same. Eventually, by the time the magic circle eventually crashes into a docked ship, Kouga finally able to don Garo Armor once more albeit in its new Master Garo upgrade and cut down the defiant Kiba, destroying what remained of his nemesis, at least for now.
Unfortunately, such upgrade comes with a price: By the time Kaoru, Rei, and Gonza catch up with Kouga, Zaruba crumbles upon realizing he spent too much energy in undoing the spell that blocked Kouga's access for his armor. This sacrifice leaves everyone devastated.
On the next day, Kouga and Kaori bid one another farewell; the former is departing for an appointment at Northern District while the latter Italy to improve her artistic skills. Kaori gives Kouga another the latest volume of The Black Flame and The Golden Wind. This is also when Rei appears to bring Kouga the restored Zaruba, though the Madō Ring has no memories pertaining him.
As Kouga leaves with Gonza, he reads the The Black Flame and The Golden Wind that Kaoru finished for him and unable to help but moved by it to the point of tearing up.
As the credits end, Kouga and Zaruba approach the Northern District and prepare to battle evil forces.
