Ordeal (試練, Shiren) is the ninth episode of the midnight tokusatsu series GARO. It features the debut of Gōten.
Synopsis[]
Kouga has slain 100 Horrors and must face a trial to prove himself worthy of a new power, the Madōba Gōten. He fights with another Garo but cannot seem to defeat him during the trial or stop the rampage of the giant Horror Humpty. Meanwhile, Kaoru is asked to repaint a mural of a goddess her father made, but is conflicted about whether she can achieve the task due to personal feelings of resentment towards him.
Summary[]
Kaoru stares at a mural in a school when she is greeted by the principal, Osamu Yagi. He tells her that she has to restore the mural as it was created by her father. Kaoru asks Osamu what her father was like when he was painting the mural. Osamu told Kaoru that his predecessor at the school, his father, was much like hers and was preoccupied with painting more that his own family.
Kouga gets sucked into the Makai and is confronted by Garo who states that he is walking the same path as his father. Garo reveals himself to be Kougas darkness and tells him that he is now allowed to summon Gōten since he has slain over one hundred horrors. To earn the right to use Gōten however, he must defeat Garo. Kouga rejects his darkness, but it lured to attack Garo when it uses Taiga Saejimas name. Kouga is drawn away from the battle when Humpty appears. Kouga fails to kill Humpty as the Garoken has no effect.
Gonza advises Kaoru to finish the painting while hinting to Kouga that he should go back to confront the Garo armor. Kouga walks away stating that the affairs of other people don't concern him.
Kaoru tells Osamu that she can repair the mural even though n one knows the pose of a hand in the mural, that was subsequently destroyed.
Gonza hands Kouga a sword that was passed through his family, a plain steel sword. Kouga confronts the Garo armor again equipped with the steel sword. Kouga duels the armor, using every tactic he familiar with to no avail.
As Kaoru restores the painting, she remembers her father ignoring he to draw the hand as well as visiting her mother in hospital. She tells Osamu how her father never visited her mother in order to paint the mural and subsequently says that she can't finish the restoration. Returning home, she finds Gonza waiting for Kouga to return from his ordeal. Gonza explained that The Golden Knight's test is the matter of reaching for something within him, something so significant he can't turn away from it. Inspired by this, Kaoru leaves to restore the mural.
Despite her newfound resolve, Kaoru is unable to finish the last part — the shape of the goddess' hand in the mural which obstructed by the sun in the background. It is when she sees the reflected light in the bucket of black paint she tossed her canvas and sketch into in her frustration Kaoru finally figures it out; the goddess is simply waving like how her late mother did when she greeted her father one day and that her said hand was nevee drawn to begin with. Reviewing the memory of her childhood which helped her completing such final piece, Kaoru changes her perspective, putting pieces together and comes to the conclusion where the mural is meant to be her late father's greatest act of love for his wife.
Back to Kouga's trial against the embodiment of his inner darkness, Kouga is similarly struggling and wondering how Taiga managed to overcome his. Realizing the nature of his opponent and that the latter consistently anticipates his tactics, he decides to trust his instincts instead. Recklessly charging through the latter's defenses head-on, Kouga thrusts his weapon into his armored doppelganger's chest, catching the latter off-guard that he fails to retaliate properly.
Kaoru contacts Gonza about her breakthrough in finishing her late father's mural, but is soon interrupted by Humpty who shows up to devour her, much to her chagrin.
Returning to his feet, the victorious Kouga learns a valuable lesson from his trial; he must never let the weakness in his heart (the feeling of fear) get best of him. Impressed, his armored doppelganger agrees with such statement just as Zaruba notifies him of Kaoru's situation. With his embodied inner darkness' blessing, Kouga rushes to rescue Kaoru from Humpty.
Saving Kaoru from Humpty's projectiles, Kouga implores Kaoru to flee. In the ensuing match against the enormous Horror as Garo, Kouga fares much better than the last time, more so now that he can summon Gōten on his side. The sight of Kouga's mechanical steed reminds Kaoru who watches the fight from the sidelines to a similar steed from her father's picture book, further hinting the possible connection between her family and Garo. Seeing that Humpty still able to endure even Gōten's kicks, Kouga turns Garoken into its greatsword form, Garo Zanbaken, and lands a titanic strike; the enlarged Makai Blade cleaves through his opponent's carapace, killing it at last.
Meeting Kaoru after properly dealt the Horror, Kouga is puzzled by Kaoru's guessing of him finally figured out what he sought in his trial prior, though she opts not to press into such matter. Kouga then tells Kaoru that she looks pretty, much to her confusion.
