The previous Golden Knight was both León Luís and Alfonso San Valiante's grandfather, and the former Golden Knight Garo.

As Rafael put it, the previous Garo was skilled in the battlefield, but wasn't good with worldly matters. It was Rafael who helped him hide his newly-born daughter and get her to be adopted by aristocrats.

Early History[]
The previous Garo and Gaia were present when Mendoza was ex-communicated from the Makai Order, restraining him as the Elder put a stigma on Mendoza.
The Carved Seal of Flames[]
As per his contract with Zaruba, a day of León's life was given to Zaruba. That lost time lingered in a realm where past, present, and future does not exist. Because of this León was able to meet his grandfather, telling the boy to not be afraid of his flames and remember what he must protect.
He also appears to Rafael Banderas, his lifelong friend, when he is near death, silently offering to escort him to the afterlife, but Rafael refuses and declares he still has work to be done.
