Biography[]
1988–2005: Early Life & Pre-Debut[]
Sayaka Akimoto was born on July 26, 1988, in Matsudo, Chiba Prefecture, to a Japanese father and a Filipino mother.[2] She spent part of her childhood living in the Philippines before returning to Japan, an experience that later influenced her multilingual ability and international outlook.
During her youth, she was known for her athletic ability and strong interest in sports, once aspiring to pursue a career in competitive athletics before turning her attention to music, dance, and performance.[3]
2006–2010: AKB48 Debut & Early Idol Career[]
In 2006, Akimoto auditioned for and was accepted into the second generation of AKB48, making her official debut as an idol performer.[4] She quickly gained attention for her athletic build, strong dance skills, and tomboyish image, which distinguished her from many of her peers within the group.
She became a core member of AKB48’s Team K and participated in numerous singles, stage performances, and variety programs, establishing herself as one of the group’s prominent performers during its period of rapid national expansion.
In 2010, she was appointed **captain of Team K**, becoming one of the youngest captains in the group’s history.[5] In the same year, she was selected as a founding member of the sub-unit **DiVA**, a performance-oriented group formed from AKB48 members with strong dance and vocal ability.[6]
2011–2013: Transition Toward Acting & Graduation[]
From the early 2010s, Akimoto increasingly focused on acting alongside her idol activities, appearing in television dramas, stage plays, and films.
On April 7, 2013, she announced on her official blog that she would not participate in AKB48’s 2013 general election and would graduate from the group in order to concentrate on her acting career.[7]
Her graduation ceremony was held on August 22, 2013, at Tokyo Dome, and her final theater performance took place on August 28, 2013, at the AKB48 Theater.[8]
Following her graduation, she continued her activities as a member of DiVA for a brief period before fully transitioning to acting.
2014–2016: Acting Career & GARO[]
After leaving AKB48, Akimoto established herself primarily as an actress, appearing in a wide range of stage productions, television dramas, and films.
In 2014, she joined the GARO franchise as Bikū, the wandering Makai Priestess and Darkness Hunter protagonist of The Makai Flower.[9] Her portrayal of Bikū marked one of the most prominent female warrior protagonists within the franchise and was noted for its physical intensity and stoic characterization.
Due to the popularity of the character, she later starred in the spin-off film Bikū Darkness Slasher (2015), which centered on Bikū’s independent storyline and expanded her role within the GARO universe.[10]
2017–Present: Continued Activities & Family Life[]
From the late 2010s onward, Akimoto has maintained a steady career centered on stage acting, film, and television. She has appeared in numerous theatrical productions, including musicals and dramatic stage plays, and has continued to expand her range as a performer beyond her idol origins.
In June 2020, she announced her marriage to Japanese rapper and lyricist PUNPEE through her official blog and social media.[11] The couple welcomed their first child in 2023.[12] She has since balanced her professional activities with family life while continuing her acting career.
